Pakistan is on the verge of reaching a preliminary agreement for the supply of three Agosta 90B submarines to Malaysia, a deal that could earn in excess of US$500 million for the country’s cash-strapped defence industry.

“We expect to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Malaysians in the very near future,” a senior Pakistan Navy officer told The Nation at the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX).

Pakistan continues to promote its export potential. Most recently, Pakistan’s Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Shahid Karimullah stated that the navies of United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Nigeria have shown interest in Pakistani-built submarines. Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have also been mentioned.
